I dislike — or have never even bothered to see — a lot of the movies that are considered some of the best of all time, and I have no problem writing about movies. I’ve never seen why liking an art form means religiously accepting certain products of that form.
I’ve never read Shakespeare, I’ve never seen The Godfather, I’ve never listened to more than three songs of The Beatles. This makes me evil and invalid as a commentator — and possibly a functioning member of society — to a lot of people, and I find that hilarious.
Watch/read/listen to what you like. At the end of the day, all this culture is just stuff people make up anyway.
(This started out as a comment somewhere else, but it fits quite well for this blog. I’ve long considered writing something like this — albeit in a longer, more elaborate form — but when the essence of it is right here, why bother with padding?)
